Why Scotland Has Twice England's Bingo Clubs Per Head

Scotland has 6.67 bingo clubs for every million people. England has 3.04. The figures come from Bingotastic, the UK bingo hall guide, which counted 37 clubs still trading in Scotland in late July 2026 and measured how far every part of Great Britain sits from its nearest one.

A year without closures

The annual hall census Bingotastic runs recorded twelve permanent hall closures across the UK in the twelve months to July 2026. None of them were in Scotland. The same period saw eight Mecca clubs in England close on a single day in June.

Scotland also had new investment to show. Club 3000 added a new club in Leith, Edinburgh, in January 2025.

Who keeps the lights on

The independents explain a lot of it. Carlton Bingo ran ten clubs at the time of the census, all of them in Scotland, from Fraserburgh and Elgin in the north east to Partick in Glasgow and Livingston in West Lothian. Club 3000 had seven Scottish clubs, including Kirkcaldy, Glenrothes, Greenock and Clydebank. Single-site operators such as Shorty's in Cowdenbeath and Forth Bingo in Falkirk fill gaps the big chains left or never reached.

Closer than you'd expect

The median Scot lives 3.1 miles from a bingo club, slightly closer than the median resident of England. Distance figures are straight-line, which flatters the Highlands, where 15 miles on a map can be an hour each way.

Glasgow

The city and its edges are well served on the census count:

  • Buzz Bingo Possil Park
  • Carlton Bingo Partick
  • Mecca Bingo Glasgow, Drumchapel, Parkhead and Paisley
  • Vogue Bingo
